Staff and Students join 'Step Up' to earn rewards for active and sustainable travel
Step Up originally launched back in October 2019 and has recently been extended for the 2021/2 academic year. It's a big thank you from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Students Union for travelling sustainably.
Every time you walk, run or cycle, get the bus, train or tram you can earn BetterPoints or BetterTickets. These can be turned in £££s to spend on campus on great local discounts and offers, or high street vouchers, as well as donate to local good causes or national charities. You can redeem with as little as 1,000 BetterPoints and donate at anytime once you start earning your rewards.
What rewards can you earn?
Get Active rewards are continuing with a focus on sustainable travel journeys. For every 25 minutes of walking, running or cycling you'll earn 1 prize draw ticket up to a maximum of 6 tickets per week.
Active and Sustainable rewards are also back! Up to four times a day for traveling sustainably around the university campus locations you will earn 25 BetterPoints.
Travelling in by train? You will also be rewarded 25 BetterPoints for using the train up to twice per day (passing through Sheffield station).
Between 1st November and 31st December there will be some fantastic prize draw prizes on offer for travelling in and around the university campus in active and sustainable ways.

Taking part in the challenge is easy!
Download the BetterPoints app from the App Store or Google Play store.
Tap “Join Now” in the app and register with your university email address.
You will automatically be eligible to join the Step Up Challenge. There will be a welcome message about this on your timeline in the app.
Start tracking your active and sustainable journeys using your app.
Remember to answer the Baseline survey by clicking the play button in the top right-hand corner and answering our short survey.
If you’d prefer to let the app detect your activities, just turn on automatic tracking. This will detect your walking, running and cycling journeys, and mark all vehicle journeys as 'In Vehicle.' Using active tracking will not affect the app's ability to detect and award your walking, running and cycling. These will appear after being validated on the app (usually within an hour of completion).
