Black, Gold & Green is a new initiative as part of the university's Step Up programme, which rewards students for arriving on campus sustainably. If you're not earning rewards yet, download the free BetterPoints app from Google Play or the App Store and register with your @sheffield.ac.uk email address and term-time postcode.
In collaboration with the Students' Union and Sport & Physical Activity Sheffield, we're delighted to launch Black, Gold & Green, a friendly competition between sports clubs to see which can be the most sustainable and active in volunteering on campus and beyond.
You and your teammates are invited to get to matches by walking/wheeling, cycling and using public (or pre-booked) transport. You will earn extra BetterPoints to spend on campus, plus you will earn BetterTickets to help your team climb the leaderboard.
Taking part is easy, simply:
- Tap Challenges ⚡️ at the bottom of the Home screen
- Select Black, Gold & Green and tap Join Challenge
- Pick your team from the list
Then you will earn BetterPoints for yourself and BetterTickets for your team by getting to the following home fixture venues sustainably:
- Goodwin Sports Centre
- Norton Sports Park
- Canon Medical Arena
- EIS (English Institute of Sport)
- Fulwood Sports Club
- Ponds Forge
- NovaCity Rotherham
If you're taking a pre-booked bus to an away fixture, one of your club's committee members will have a QR for you to scan on your journey. If your club doesn't take part in the BUCS fixture programme there will be other ways for you to compete, for example by cycling to the meeting point for Saturday rides at Wharncliffe Woods.
What prizes can we win!?
Every month, the top team will win a free pitch booking courtesy of Sport & Physical Activity Sheffield and in March 2026 the winning team will win the Black, Gold & Green Sustainable Sport Cup.
We'll be working hard to get additional team prizes, which will be easier to secure the more club members sign up - so please get all your teammates involved! There are 2x £25 prizes in our weekly Refer a Friend draws in October - tap Menu, More ways to earn and Refer a Friend to easily share your unique referral code with teammates. Make sure they register with their @sheffield.ac.uk email and term-time postcode.
As an added incentive to go green, there will also be regular prize draws for hot drink vouchers and pots of BetterPoints - the BetterTickets that help your team climb the leaderboard will also be entries into these draws, so make sure you travel sustainably to all your sporting engagements!
